Dr. Richard Mankin, researcher for the USDA and collaborating with Global PBS on proof-of-concept, published a scientific paper in October 2010 based on our PBS detection system. The technology and prototype was also featured in an Agricultural Research Magazine article in March 2011.

Betsy Bennett, Consulting CFO, joins the Advisory Board

Betsy Bennett, Founder of Bennett Consulting Services, Inc. in Tampa, Florida, joins the Global PBS Advisory Board. Betsy is the second of two consulting CFOs on the Advisory Board for Global PBS. She offers a perspective uniquely different and equally valuable in comparison to the other consulting CFO. We look forward to Betsy’s advice as we expand the PBS technology to each new industry sector.

Ray Reher, Consulting CFO, joins the Global PBS Team

Ray Reher, President and owner, of Innovative CFO Solutions, Inc. in Sarasota, FL will consult to Global PBS on financial strategies for launch of its bed bug detection product.

Ray has over 25 years of experience serving as Chief Financial Officer for emerging growth and middle-market businesses. He has a broad range of experience from helping startups launch to increasing existing company revenues 6X. He will be a key support element to the Global PBS C-Suite.

Chief Business Development Officer (CBDO)

Global PBS has engaged Joseph G Zendegui, PhD as it’s chief business development officer (CBDO) in preparation for launching a bed bug sensor network to the hospitality industry.

Joe has a Medical Science education and a bio-consulting background which is a very good fit for the Global PBS vision.

Vector-Borne Diseases Seminar

The first in a series of seminars on vector-borne diseases was held on January 31, 2011 at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in Orlando, FL. BioFlorida and Industry colleagues were invited to attend the discussion on ‘Detection, Prevention & Treatment of Vector-Borne Diseases’. With zoonoses comprising about 65-75% of new disease discoveries I was interested in the response to ‘early warning’ technology as a decisively beneficial component of an overall solution for any new disease.

The program focus was planned for mosquito-bred diseases. However, as I had hoped, the broader discussion migrated to public-private collaboration on vector-borne diseases in general. I took an opportunity to suggest to the audience that there is growing support for the idea that a solution should no longer be compartmentalized into discovery, academic research, industry development, etc., but rather a complete discovery-to-consumer effort. Each supporting entity could then be identified and engaged at an appropriate time. The entire public-private integration could be planned earlier and the steps from R&D to delivery would be more efficient; especially with regard to funding requirements as a whole rather than piece-meal and from many resources with differing timetables.

The group of about 50 participants were mostly from academia, but moving more toward public-private cooperation to deliver solutions was well received. Follow up seminars are planned in the coming months and Global PBS will continue to be represented.

Business Plan detour for Bed Bugs!

2010 was game changing for many industries; primarily because of economic repositioning. Global PBS was no exception. Our business plan dictates a ‘hub & spoke’ business model which requires a strategic partnership launch to commercialization for each new pest sensor type. We have not changed that model, but we will take exception with the strategic partner requirement for the initial product launch.

In 2010 we realized a growing urgency to support the hotel segment of the hospitality industry to early detect bed bugs. Early warning of these pests will help best method practices (BMP) to be more effective. So, Global PBS is preparing to seek R&D funding to develop and test a bed bug sensor network for likely deployment in the winter of 2011/2012.

Marketing Manager

Global PBS contracted with Limelight Marketing Consultants to assist with initial strategic planning and preparations for funding the bed bug project. Liane Caruso will continue with Global PBS in the capacity of marketing manager. She will oversee commencement of marketing efforts specific to our business plan and ensure corporate communications are on track as we move toward initial commercialization.

‘Early warning’ of zoonosis

Prema Arasu, PhD, DVM, AVP and Professor at NCSU in Raleigh, NC (US) completed a trip to India in late January 2010 researching zoonoses. As we have interest in early detection of zoonoses we will follow her work and possibly collaborate at some point on deployment of sensors to detect a specific zoonosis.
